Anyone who plays with a Shure stick mic – like the popular 545, SM-57, or SM-58 – knows what wonderful harp mics they are – great tone and range. Their biggest drawback for harp players, however, is the cartridge’s or ball screen’s diameter. The Lipstick Harmonica Mic with Volume Control has a similar frequency response (50-12,000 Htz). At the same time, it naturally reduces the mic’s size in both diameter, length, and weight while adding a volume control for on-the-fly control. Now there’s a solution.

The Shure 570 and 570s are vintage dynamic lavalier microphones manufactured with a fixed, non-removable cable. Greg Heumann at BlowsMeAway has removed the non-removable cable and built a custom-designed barrel to house a volume control and XLR connector, facilitating a standard, removable balanced microphone cable.

This microphone contains a vintage dynamic capsule and brand Ultimate conversion.

Note you can also use the screw-on to 1/4″ cable above into a “Direct Box” (aka “DI” or “Direct Input” box) – and from there to the PA. Sound guys always have DI boxes – that’s how they connect basses and keyboards to the PA. An XLR to XLR cable runs from the DI box to the PA.

Greg Heumann’s cables are of the highest possible quality. Made with CBI Ultimate 18ga professional microphone cable for high-impedance work, the cable is well-shielded and very soft/easy to coil. Both connectors are shrinkwrapped to the cable for extra strain relief; an extra step for screw-on connectors is that Greg glues the shrinkwrap to the cable and connector to prevent the cable from spinning within the connector – which is the usual cause of failure.
